Let's have a - REAL LIFE CONNECTION
Lock the doors, come to play
I am listening to an audiobook called Digital Minimalism. It does what it says on the tin - teaching about a different way of living with technology. As a creative, I rely on social media to get word out about my projects, connect with artists, and gain opportunities. It can be easy to get sucked into the doom scrolling and rhetoric that these channels are alike basic necessities. It uses Facebook as a case study often - why do we really need it? Instead of “liking” a picture of your aunt’s friend’s dog’s new baby online, how about you visit them?
We are living in a world where it’s easier than ever to be connected but we still feel lonely. With that in mind, I am gravitating towards community-based projects within my creative life so I can fill the void of transaction-based interactions you so easily can get everywhere else in life.
Next week I will be debuting a new show called Paper Privilege at the Bush Theatre (the live version of this very podcast, listen to eps 1-3 now!) created out of a want to connect with people like myself. Tired of others boxing us in and telling us who we are. Its time for us to create for ourselves and to be together.
The premise of this show is to encourage longer form work (10 minutes) with low stakes (you get paid for your time, but it’s all experimental). After each piece, I will invite the audience to draw/write/sing in response to the piece. As a student of this earth, I feel like we rarely get to deep dive into live performance. So this is an exercise in everything I hold dear - play and analysis. It might seem a little contradictory, but like I said, low stakes. We were put on this earth to roll around in the grass. As performers, this is the best we can get.
I hope to see you there. (Link above!)
Love and light,
Bard The Beholder
